Hungarian Jam Cookies (Lekváros Papucs)

Ingredients

For the Dough:

  • 250 g (1 cup) unsalted butter, softened
  • 200 g (7 oz) cream cheese, softened
  • 2 cups (250 g) all-purpose flour
  • 2 tablespoons sugar
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract (optional)
  • Pinch of salt

For the Filling:

  • Thick plum jam (traditional) or apricot jam

Instructions

  1. In a large bowl, cream together the butter and cream cheese until smooth.
  2. Add flour, sugar, vanilla extract, and salt. Mix until a soft dough forms.
  3. Wrap the dough in plastic wrap and refrigerate for 30–60 minutes.
  4. Preheat the oven to 180°C (350°F) and line a baking sheet with parchment paper.
  5. Roll out the chilled dough on a lightly floured surface to about 3 mm (⅛ inch) thickness.
  6. Cut the dough into small squares (about 5–6 cm / 2 inches).
  7. Place about 1 teaspoon of jam in the center of each square.
  8. Fold two opposite corners toward the center, slightly overlapping them over the filling.
  9. Place the cookies on the prepared baking sheet.
  10. Bake for 15–20 minutes, or until lightly golden.

Allow to cool before serving. Optionally, dust with powdered sugar.
