Classic Vanilla Custard Cake (Magic-Style Custard Squares) 🍮✨

This Vanilla Custard Cake is a simple, old-fashioned dessert that magically bakes into soft layers — a light sponge on top with a creamy custard center. It’s made with pantry staples and finished with a dusting of powdered sugar for that bakery-style touch.

Perfect for family desserts, holidays, or cozy afternoons with coffee.

Ingredients

  • 4 large eggs 🥚
  • 1 cup sugar
  • ½ cup unsalted butter, melted 🧈
  • 1 tsp vanilla extract 🍦
  • 1 cup all-purpose flour
  • 2 cups milk, lukewarm 🥛
  • ¼ tsp salt 🧂
  • Powdered sugar, for dusting

Instructions

  1. Preheat the oven
    Preheat oven to 160°C (325°F).
Grease an 8×8-inch (20×20 cm) baking dish or line with parchment paper.
  2. Separate the eggs
    Separate egg whites from yolks.
Beat egg whites until stiff peaks form. Set aside.
  3. Prepare the batter
In a large bowl, beat egg yolks with sugar until pale and creamy.
Add melted butter and vanilla extract; mix well.
  4. Add dry ingredients
Mix in flour and salt until smooth.
  5. Add milk
Slowly pour in milk while mixing. Batter will be very thin — this is normal.
  6. Fold in egg whites
Gently fold whipped egg whites into the batter in 3 additions.
Do not overmix; small lumps are fine.
  7. Bake
    Pour batter into prepared dish.
Bake for 45–50 minutes, until the top is lightly golden and the center is set but slightly jiggly.
  8. Cool & serve
    Let cool completely before slicing.
Dust with powdered sugar before serving.
