Töltött Káposzta 🇭🇺

Ingredients

  • 1 large head of cabbage
  • 1 lb (450 g) ground pork (or beef/pork mix)
  • ½ cup rice, uncooked
  • 1 large onion, finely chopped
  • 1 egg
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • ½ teaspoon black pepper
  • 1 teaspoon paprika
  • 2 cups tomato sauce or crushed tomatoes
  • 2–3 cups sauerkraut (optional, for traditional flavor)

Directions

  1. Core the cabbage and carefully separate the leaves. Blanch leaves in boiling water 2–3 minutes until pliable. Drain and cool.
  2. In a bowl, mix ground meat, rice, onion, garlic, egg, salt, pepper, and paprika.
  3. Place a spoonful of filling on each cabbage leaf and roll, tucking in the sides.
  4. Layer some tomato sauce (and sauerkraut if using) at the bottom of a large pot.
  5. Arrange cabbage rolls in the pot, seam side down. Pour remaining tomato sauce over the top.
  6. Cover and simmer gently 60–75 minutes until cabbage is tender and filling is cooked.

Serve warm, often with a dollop of sour cream.
