Hungarian Homemade Bread (Házi Kenyér)

Ingredients

  • 500 g all-purpose or bread flour
  • 10 g salt
  • 7 g dry yeast
  • 300 ml lukewarm water
  • 1 tablespoon oil (optional)

Instructions

  1. In a bowl, mix flour, salt, and dry yeast.
  2. Add lukewarm water (and oil if using) and mix until a sticky dough forms.
  3. Knead for 8–10 minutes until smooth and elastic.
  4. Cover and let rise in a warm place until doubled in size (about 1 hour).
  5. Shape the dough into a loaf.
  6. Place in a greased baking dish or on a tray.
  7. Cover and let rise again for 30–40 minutes.
  8. Preheat oven to 220°C / 430°F.
  9. Score the top of the bread with a sharp knife.
  10. Bake for 30–35 minutes until golden brown and hollow-sounding when tapped.
  11. Let cool on a rack before slicing.
