🇭🇺 Hungarian Chimney Cake (Kürtőskalács) – Sweet, Crispy, and Irresistible!

Kürtőskalács is one of Hungary’s most famous street desserts — a golden, spiral-shaped pastry that’s crunchy on the outside and soft on the inside. Traditionally baked over charcoal and rolled in cinnamon sugar, it fills the air with a heavenly aroma that’s impossible to resist!

🍰 Ingredients:

For the dough:

  • 3 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 packet (7 g) active dry yeast
  • ½ cup warm milk
  • ¼ cup sugar
  • 2 egg yolks
  • ½ cup melted butter
  • 1 tsp vanilla extract
  • A pinch of salt

For coating:

  • ½ cup sugar
  • 1 tsp ground cinnamon (optional)
  • Melted butter (for brushing)

👩‍🍳 Instructions:

  1. Activate yeast:
In a small bowl, mix warm milk, sugar, and yeast. Let it sit for 10 minutes until foamy.
  2. Prepare the dough:
In a large bowl, combine flour and salt. Add egg yolks, vanilla, melted butter, and the yeast mixture.
Knead into a smooth dough (about 8–10 minutes).
Cover and let rise for 1 hour, or until doubled in size.
  3. Shape the chimney cakes:
    Preheat oven to 375°F (190°C).
Grease cylindrical molds (like rolling pins, glass bottles covered in foil, or special kürtőskalács molds).
Roll dough into long strips about ½ inch thick. Wrap each strip around the mold, slightly overlapping.
  4. Brush and coat:
Brush each roll with melted butter and roll in cinnamon sugar until well coated.
  5. Bake:
Place molds horizontally on a baking sheet (resting on the edges).
Bake for 15–20 minutes, turning occasionally for even browning.
  6. Finish and serve:
Once golden, brush again with melted butter and sprinkle with extra sugar or your favorite toppings.

🌟 Popular Toppings:

  • Ground walnuts
  • Cocoa sugar
  • Coconut flakes
  • Vanilla sugar
  • Crushed biscuits

💡 Tip:

Enjoy kürtőskalács warm — the sugar caramelizes beautifully, creating that signature crispy shell with a soft, buttery center. Perfect with coffee or a cup of hot chocolate! ☕
