🇭🇺 Pogácsa – Traditional Hungarian Biscuits

Ingredients

  • 3 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 cup butter or lard, softened
  • 1 cup sour cream
  • 1 packet (7 g) dry yeast
  • 1 teaspoon sugar
  • ½ cup warm milk
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1 egg (for brushing)
  • ½ cup grated cheese (optional, for topping)

Directions

  1. Dissolve yeast and sugar in warm milk. Let sit 5–10 minutes until foamy.
  2. Mix flour and salt in a large bowl. Rub in butter or lard until crumbly.
  3. Add sour cream and yeast mixture. Knead into a soft dough. Let rise 45–60 minutes.
  4. Roll dough to ¾-inch thickness. Cut into small rounds using a biscuit cutter.
  5. Place on a lined baking sheet. Brush with beaten egg and sprinkle with cheese if desired.
  6. Bake at 375°F (190°C) for 20–25 minutes until golden.
