🇭🇺 Baked Stuffed Peppers (Töltött Paprika)

Ingredients

  • 6–8 bell peppers, tops removed and seeds cleaned
  • 1 lb (500g) ground pork (or pork & beef mix)
  • ½ cup uncooked rice
  • 1 small onion, finely chopped
  • 1 egg
  • 1 teaspoon sweet paprika
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • ½ teaspoon black pepper

Tomato Sauce:

  • 2 cups tomato sauce or crushed tomatoes
  • 1 cup water
  • 1 tablespoon sugar
  • 1 tablespoon flour
  • 1 tablespoon oil

Instructions

  1. Preheat oven to 350°F (175°C).
  2. In a bowl, combine ground meat, rice, onion, egg, paprika, salt, and pepper.
  3. Stuff each pepper with the meat mixture and place upright in a baking dish.
  4. In a small pan, heat oil and stir in flour to make a light roux. Add tomato sauce, water, and sugar, stirring until smooth.
  5. Pour sauce over the peppers so they are nearly covered.
  6. Cover with foil and bake 45–60 minutes until meat and rice are fully cooked.
  7. Serve hot with extra sauce and fresh bread.
